Retain is an email archiving solution for Novell GroupWise® that integrates directly within GroupWise.
Retain takes advantage of GroupWise SmartPurge functionality, ensuring all email is archived based upon specific criteria set by the administrator. Retain also utilizes the latest Novell SOAP API as its base data collector. Retain can be easily installed and configured to archive all GroupWise email in a matter of minutes and provides extensive and easy to use search tools to achieve full control over your GroupWise archives.
Retain Solution
Retain from GWAVA has been developed in conjunction with Novell and the latest version of Novell GroupWise. With over 50% of all GroupWise customers worldwide running some version of GWAVA software, GWAVA has established a relationship with the Novell GroupWise Engineering team as well as the Global GroupWise community. This has allowed GWAVA to produce Retain, a product focused exclusively on the unique needs of GroupWise Email Archiving

There are many e-mail archiving solutions in the marketplace, however Retain has an important differentiator; it is part of a complete email management solution that provides email archiving, search, retrieval, email auditing, backup and disaster recovery. Retain is not a point solution. Retain is part of a portfolio of GroupWise tools which enables it to combine email security with email archiving. Retain offers the following capabilities:
- RetainWorker Agent gathers email from the GroupWise Post Offices and sends it to the RetainServer In addition; the RetainWorker Agent executes Jobs on a scheduled base for email policy enforcement.
RetainDB - Contains all Meta data, folder structure, attachment info, but not the actual attachments or message text. Currently, Retain is available with MySQL with MS SQL and Oracle support soon to be available.
RetainServer - Provides GUI interface for all users and administrators. Indexes and stores all attachments and body text which provides efficient and high volume searching and document production capabilities. This insures that retrieving, reviewing and exporting archived messages is easy and user-friendly. In addition the GroupWise Address book is cached for offline access. Retain has been developed to help companies meet a wide range of regulatory challenges and internal corporate policies.

Archive/Retention vs. Disaster Recovery/Backup
Organizational email retention needs have a wide variety of sources. A word needs to be said for Archiving/Email Retention vs. Disaster Recovery/Email Backup. Disaster Recovery/Backup and Archiving/Retention solutions for email can appear similar in their scope and deployment due to the similarities in functions; mainly, collect email for access at a later time.
The difference between the two lies primarily in their deployment and access after the data has been collected.
Integration between Archive and Backup is necessary to maintain complete protection from data loss as well as easy access to data.

Retain Product Overview
Retain from GWAVA is an Enterprise Email Archiving and Retention Solution that integrates with Reload from GWAVA for full email Disaster Recovery and Backup. Retain operates on multiple OS platforms. This insures that current infrastructure is utilized to full capacity while also allowing growth and expansion to emerging platforms.
Currently Retain is supported on:
- NetWare, Linux or Windows as your server platform(s)
- Novell GroupWise (Version 7.0.1, 7.0.1IR, or higher)
- Apache 2.0x or 2.2x Web Server OR Microsoft IIS 5.0/6.0
- Sun's JDK (the JRE is not sufficient)
- Apache TomCat Application Server
- SQL Database for storage
(MySQL 5.x. Other Databases will be supported in the future.)
Other system requirements:
- 1 GB RAM
- JVM 1.42+
- TomCat 4.1+
- MySQL 5 (Support for MS SQL and Oracle in future version)
SOAP
Retain utilizes SOAP for integration and authentication. This allows new users to access the archive message store utilizing their current GroupWise account ID and password. Offline authentication is also available.
Storage and Encryption
Data compression and encryption utilizing SHA-1 and MD5 ensure secure data storage as well as smaller storage requirements. Also, with single instance storage, a single copy of the message is stored once for multiple recipients.
Indexing
Indexing is available with two methods. Background Indexing is fast and effective, placing less of a load on the RetainServer, while Real-time Indexing is faster and provides immediate access but increases the work load.
Message Status Archiving
Unique characteristics of Retain include the archiving of Message Status. These special flags unique to GroupWise, allow users to determine if a message has been opened, read, or private. By archiving this information, data is preserved in the case of discovery.
Retention and Purge Flags
Retain takes advantage of new features in the GroupWise message store, specifically Retention and Purge flags. These flags, introduced in GroupWise 6.0 and GroupWise 6.5.1 enable Retain to intelligently backup data without duplication. In addition, Retain utilizes the new Trusted Application API that now allows increased integration with GroupWise.
Generally, full archive is wanted by most email retention regulation, but in the case of specific archiving needs, Retain.s unique capabilities allow the archiving of single subfolders within a user.s mailbox.
